ATHLETICS |
A term
that includes a whole range of different sporting competitions: cross
country and track running, relay running, jumping (including broad, high and
triple jumps and pole vaulting), hurdling, throwing (including javelin, discus,
shot put and hammer throw), and tug of war.
Athletics
can be traced back to ancient Greek Olympics in the 13th century BC. Running is
the earliest known Olympic sport. Throwing and jumping may have been introduced
later. Originally races were run over a length of the stadium which was about
200 yards. The first winner of a race in the earliest recorded Olympics in 776 BC
was a sprinter named Coriobos.
